On-the-spot inspection of cylinder bores
|
| Fries Research & Technology GmbH (FRT) has developed a mobile measuring system for the automotive industry. The portable MicroProf® Cylinder Measuring Station is used to in-spect cylinder bores of an engine block. It has been developed especially for non-contact, on-the-spot measurement and features a high level of usability plus the well known precision of FRT metrology solutions. The measuring system is used to optimize an engine’s perform-ance during the development stage or to monitor the quality of production output “in-situ”. From mass production to the field of motorsport – the MicroProf® Cylinder Measuring Station reliably detects roughness, profile, topography, honing structure, bearing curve, oil retention volume, wear volume and more.
Once the system is mounted, it is precisely positioned with the engine block due to a special self-adjusting design. The movable sensor head then descends into the cylinder bore and measures the designated surface section.
On the MicroProf® Cylinder Measuring Station, the linear x-axis has been replaced by a rotary axis. In combination with a 90° angled optical sensor the system measures profile and surface sections as well as entire radial profiles and surfaces. The whole measuring cycle is automated - from self-adjustment in the beginning up to the final analysis at the end.
The integrated chromatic white light (CWL) sensor ensures reliable results on nearly all types of surfaces with its lateral resolution of 1 μm and vertical resolution of a few nanometers. The system’s electronics are integrated in a movable rack, that is also used for secure storage of the measuring head, when it is not in use.
The powerful and easy to use FRT Mark III software package displays profiles and surfaces. This way it is possible, to measure roughness and structure, but also texture, abrasion, bearing curve, volumes, honing structure, laser structures or other important surface characteristics.
